Next week, March 10-13, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing’s Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth will once again host free Spring Break events and demonstrations for local students! Come to the Bureau anytime during these days from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for various activities.  You can:

  • Witness Intaglio engraving artisanship at the engraver’s workbench.
  • Learn about plate making for Offset printing presses.
  • Enjoy the educational activities in the Kid$ Corral where children over 8 years old can engrave and print their very own currency design (9am-3pm).
  • Watch mutilated currency be reconstructed piece-by-piece.
  • See how currency was printed circa 1900 at the refurbished spider press.
  • Learn how Intaglio printing plates are “grown” in a nickel solution.

And there’s more! Take a self-guided tour on the elevated walkway, explore two floors of interactive exhibits and displays, enjoy the theater movie on currency production, and visit the gift shop, where you can purchase uncut currency and souvenir items.

When you visit, remember to keep most of your belongings in the car – cell phones, electronic equipment, back packs, cameras, weapons (including knives, pellet guns, mace, etc.), explosives, food, and drinks are prohibited.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is at 9000 Blue Mound Rd. in Fort Worth.

Cliburn Tickets on the Cheap

Category : entertainment, Featured

The Cliburn Festival, featuring the works of Chopin, is happening this week from March 5-8 at the Kimbell Art Museum. Tickets are usually $35 apiece. However, there are a few ways to get seats for cheaper. Here are some ways to get discounts:

Be a student. Students can get tickets for $10 each, beginning 1 hour before each performance. The website doesn’t say, but I would assume you’d need to bring your student ID along.

Wait until the last minute. One hour before each sold-out performance, a line will form at the venue box office to sell tickets in case of last-minute cancellations or no-shows. If any seats are available, you can get them for $20 apiece. As always, standby tickets aren’t guaranteed, and there’s no promise you’ll be able to sit with your companion. (These last-minute deals apply not only to the Cliburn Festival performances, but to all Cliburn performances. However, I’m told that last-minute discounts aren’t available for the Cliburn at the Bass series, since the seating capacity is so great that a sell-out never happens.)

Go to a Cliburn Session. These are relaxed performances held in unusual venues, and all tickets are $20 each. The next Cliburn Session will be March 19 at The Live Oak. (Buy ahead of time, since at-the-door tickets are $25.)

See a schedule of Cliburn Festival performances here.

Free Pancakes at IHOP

Category : family, Featured, food, free

photo ihoppancakeday2015_zpssw4kxxx5.pngCome to your local IHOP tomorrow, March 3, for their National Pancake Day celebration. On this day, everyone can get a short stack of pancakes absolutely free. In return for the pancakes, guests are asked to consider making a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. My kids and I usually hit up IHOP in the afternoon during this celebration and donate about $8-10 – they have fun and it’s super cheap!

Find your local IHOP here.

Free CrossFit Workout in Fort Worth

Category : entertainment, Featured, fitness, free

On Thursday, March 5 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., CrossFit Chisholm Trail will host Dude Crew, a “membership-free monthly meet up for dudes dedicated to exploring and enjoying our active community of Fort Worth.” Though the title says “dudes,” they say “dudettes” are welcome too. There’s no description of the particular workout that will be done, but since it’s at a CrossFit facility, you should probably get ready for some WOD goodness. Afterwards, members will meet at Lone Star Oyster Bar next door for a post-workout meal (on your own dime).

CrossFit Chisholm Trail is at 474 Bryant Irvin Rd, Suite 934 in Fort Worth.
